‘Everything is destroyed,’ Paris pharmacy owner says after protests

France was rocked by some of its worst rioting in recent years on Saturday, just six months before the country elects a successor to President Emmanuel Macron.

Images of clashes and public buildings set on fire or vandalised circulated around the world, prompting several countries, including the United States, China and Germany, to issue travel advisories for their citizens in France.

And closer to home there has been anger among locals after it emerged that at least 3,000 shops across the country had been vandalised or looted.

“The scale of the damage is immense. Everything is destroyed, everything. I have no stock left, they burned it all,” Odelia, a pharmacy owner in Paris, told Euronews.

“I don’t even understand how someone could set on fire the building when there are homes above it.”

“They behaved like animals. They ripped out my water heater. They tore down my light fixtures. Is this how you protest the high cost of living?”

Meanwhile, France will impose new curfews in areas where needed on Tuesday, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said, adding that the measures introduced in several cities the previous day had “helped keep the night calm”.

Under pressure, the government scheduled another series of emergency meetings on Tuesday, including talks involving representatives of major social media platforms.

Switzerland’s neutrality vote is asking the wrong question

    By Peter NovakSeptember 25, 20260

On September 27, Switzerland votes on whether to lock a stricter definition of neutrality into its constitution. The initiative would bar Switzerland from cooperating with a military alliance unless it were under military attack or such an attack were being prepared, and prevent it from imposing sanctions on a belligerent state unless those sanctions were…

Apple’s hyper-pricey M5 Ultra Mac Studio made me into a vibe coder

    By Peter NovakSeptember 25, 20260

When Apple was using Intel processors and AMD GPUs, the idea of an expandable and upgradeable tower made sense. But Apple Silicon chips bring the CPU, GPU, and memory interface all under one roof in a way that makes that sort of upgradeability not just superfluous but impossible. At least not without breaking some of…
