I earned a free coffee after just 5 visits with this rewarding loyalty program

When I recently compared Starbucks Rewards, Dunkin’ Rewards and Dutch Bros Rewards for TPG’s guide to coffee loyalty programs, the gap between how much each program rewards its members was bigger than I expected.

To earn a free coffee or tea at standard earning rates, a Dunkin’ base member needs just $60 in qualifying spending, compared with about $83 at Dutch Bros and $100 at Starbucks.

Still, $60 is a lot of coffee just to earn a free cup and could take weeks, which didn’t feel very rewarding.

So, I set myself a challenge: Sign up for Dunkin’ Rewards as a new member, and see how few visits it would take to earn a free cup of Joe.

Could I do it in under a week?

As I discovered, the right app promotion can reduce the number of visits needed to make it easier to earn one.

Why Dunkin’ Rewards is the fast way to free rewards

Dunkin’ Rewards members earn 10 Dunkin’ points per dollar spent on qualifying purchases (generally, this means excluding tax and tip). Visit 12 times in a calendar month, and you’ll earn Boosted status, which awards an additional 2 points per dollar spent, for three months.

You earn points by scanning your Dunkin’ Rewards ID before you pay, paying with an enrolled Dunkin’ card or ordering ahead in the Dunkin’ app. The earning rate is the same, whether you pay with cash, a credit or debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Delivery orders don’t earn points, and neither do purchases or reloads of Dunkin’ gift cards.

You can redeem Dunkin’ Rewards points by converting them to the following rewards:

    • 150 points: A three-count order of Munchkins doughnut hole treats, one six-piece order of hash browns or a drink customization (such as the addition of cold foam, an espresso shot, extra swirl or syrup)
    • 300 points: One classic doughnut
    • 400 points: One bakery item, including a 10-count order of Munchkins, a muffin or an iced loaf slice
    • 500 points: A Wake-Up Wrap with or without meat, an order of Stuffed Bagel Minis, a Croissant Stuffer, a Snackin’ Bacon or a bagel with cream cheese spread
    • 600 points: A hot or iced coffee or tea of any size
    • 800 points: One noncoffee drink, including a Dunkin’ Refresher, hot chocolate, and a hot or iced chai or matcha latte
    • 900 points: One breakfast sandwich with your choice of meat, egg, cheese and bread
    • 950 points: Any specialty coffee or frozen drink, including espresso drinks, a Shakin’ Espresso, a cold brew, a signature latte or a Dunkalatte

Dunkin’ Rewards points expire 12 months after the last day of the month in which they were earned, regardless of account activity. Once points are converted into a standard reward, that reward generally expires after 30 days, so wait until you are ready to use it.

Tips for maximizing the Dunkin’ Rewards loyalty program

After using it daily for a week, I found the Dunkin’ app straightforward and easy to use. Ordering ahead meant I did not have to remember to show or scan my loyalty ID in stores, and the app clearly tracked my points.

Keeping an eye on special offers in the app is the easiest way to earn additional points, both through publicly available offers for all members and through personalized offers based on your coffee habits.

The publicly available offers during my testing included:

    • Earn four times the usual points on all beverages when ordering ahead on Mondays in October. The offer is limited to one use per member each Monday and requires activation.
    • Earn 20% more points on every qualifying purchase as a Boosted status member.
    • Earn 100 bonus points on one qualifying order placed after 1 p.m. each day through Oct. 31 as a Boosted status member. Activation is required.

After redeeming my free coffee, I then also received a one-day personalized offer of 3 points per dollar spent on food items (activation required).

If you are a regular Dunkin’ drinker or plan to become one, I would prioritize gaining Boosted status (which requires at least 12 visits in a month) as quickly as possible to earn the 20% bonus points. Then, look out for bonus offers like the ones mentioned above, as the bonus points they offer can quickly add up.

Ensure you read the terms of the bonus offers carefully. I initially thought my four-times-the-points offer on Mondays was for both food and drinks, and it wasn’t until my points were credited (immediately after purchase) that I realized the offer was only for beverages.

How I earned a free coffee in 5 visits with Dunkin’ Rewards

Being new to the program, I wanted to try a few different items on the menu at different locations. So, within one week, I made the following purchases:

    • Day 1: A $6.21 hot latte at an airport location, earning 56 points
    • Day 2: A $16.19 meal that included a sourdough breakfast sandwich, a three-count order of Munchkins and a hot latte, earning 304 points with the 4 points per dollar drink bonus on Mondays
    • Day 3: A $6.58 breakfast combo that included a breakfast croissant, hash browns and an original blend iced coffee, earning 60 points
    • Day 4: A $10.50 order of a Halloween iced latte specialty drink and two classic doughnuts, earning 98 points
    • Day 5: A $10.84 order of a hot latte and five Munchkins, earning 99 points

My five orders totaled $50.32 and earned 617 points. I particularly enjoyed the doughnut holes and the hot lattes, though those who like strong coffee may wish to add an extra shot of espresso to large milk-based drinks.

After just five visits, I had passed the magical 600-point threshold, earning enough points for a complimentary large hot or iced tea or coffee reward.

I quickly chose to convert 600 points into a free drink and got creative with my order to get as much value as possible from the reward, ordering a large original blend iced coffee with sweet cold foam and multiple pumps of two sweeteners. Even with my customizations, the order was completely free, leaving me with no out-of-pocket cost.

This proved an excellent-value use of points. The reward covered a $5.80 large iced coffee, giving me a redemption value of about 0.97 cents per point, well above our value of Dunkin’ Rewards points of 0.60 cents each.

Though I did feel a little ill downing this massive drink just before boarding a two-hour flight, you can’t deny the value.

How to stack credit card rewards with coffee rewards

On top of earning Dunkin’ Rewards points on your coffee and snack purchases, remember that by paying for your coffee and snacks with the right credit card, you can also earn the following rewards:

    • Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (see rates and fees): 6 points per dollar spent on restaurant purchases, including restaurant delivery services, on Citi Nights℠ (between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday Eastern time and from 6 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday Eastern time); restaurant purchases outside this window earn 3 points per dollar spent
    • American Express® Gold Card: 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide (on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar), plus up to $7 in monthly statement credits for U.S. Dunkin’ purchases (enrollment required)
    • Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees), Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) and Citi Strata Premier® Card (see rates and fees): 3 points per dollar spent on dining
    • Chase Freedom Unlimited® (see rates and fees): 3% cash back on dining
    • Any eligible Bank of America credit or debit card: 2% cash back on qualifying in-app Starbucks purchases, plus 1 bonus Star for every $2 spent, excluding taxes and tips

Coffee shops generally qualify as dining, but merchant category codes can vary. Airport concessions and Dunkin’ locations inside other retailers may not earn a card’s dining bonus.

    Bottom line

As a new member of Dunkin’ Rewards, I was impressed by how quickly I could earn a free drink and that my freebie was the real deal, not some watered-down discount. The bonus offers in the app are a fun enticement to rack up points faster, and I was quickly offered both publicly available and personalized bonuses.

Those Munchkins doughnut holes are quite delicious, too.

To maximize your coffee rewards, download the Dunkin’ app, activate bonus offers you would use anyway and work your way toward Boosted status if 12 qualifying visits in a calendar month can easily fit into your routine.

    How’s that for rewarding?
