Two people, a minor and a young adult, were killed and 16 others injured in a school bus crash in eastern France on Friday morning, according to local authorities.

The accident occurred at around 7 a.m. in Lent, in the Ain department, northeast of Lyon. The circumstances of the crash remain unclear.

The Ain prefecture activated an emergency response plan, deploying rescue teams, police and two helicopters to the scene. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced he would travel to the site, while Education Minister Édouard Geffray expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.

Authorities have not yet provided a detailed breakdown of the injuries.
