Bulgaria Stuns Poland in EuroVolley Thriller
Sports| September 16, 2026, Wednesday // 22:58
Bulgaria pulled off a dramatic 3 – 2 victory over Poland at EuroVolley 2026, overcoming one of the world’s strongest volleyball teams in a tense match that went all the way to 20 – 18 in the deciding set.
Gianlorenzo Blengini’s squad showed determination and composure throughout a match marked by repeated momentum swings and long, hard-fought rallies. The two teams traded sets before the encounter was decided in a thrilling fifth set.
Bulgaria made a strong start to the tie-break, quickly taking a 3 – 0 lead. After Poland responded and the teams exchanged points, Denislav Bardarov produced a difficult play to level the score at 6 – 6.
Alex Nikolov then delivered a crucial attack as Bulgaria moved ahead 8 – 4 at the change of ends. Bardarov continued to cause problems for the Polish block, powering home another point to extend Bulgaria‘s advantage to 10 – 5.
Poland refused to give up, cutting the deficit to 9 – 11 and forcing Blengini to call a timeout. A Polish service error gave Bulgaria some breathing room at 12 – 10, before Bardarov struck again from the middle to make it 13 – 11.
Poland called timeout, then scored to close the gap to 12 – 13. Bulgaria immediately responded with a timeout of its own. Bardarov then finished another difficult ball to give Bulgaria its first match point at 14 – 12.
The drama continued. Another Polish service error gave Bulgaria another opportunity to finish the match, but Poland remained alive. Nikolov produced a powerful attack to level the score at 15 – 15 and put Bulgaria in position to fight for another match point.
The teams continued trading points well beyond the usual 15-point mark. Poland repeatedly erased Bulgarian match points, but the Bulgarian players remained composed in the decisive rallies.
Bulgaria finally broke through, winning the tie-break 20 – 18 and completing a memorable victory over Poland.
Despite the win, Bulgaria finished third in its group with four victories, one defeat and 11 points. The result means the Bulgarian team will meet Germany, the runner-up in Group D, in the Round of 16.
The knockout match is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, at 7:00 PM at Arena Sofia.
