Dinner, Broadway, and one big group check: The card built for nights out

Dinner, Broadway, and one big group check: The card built for nights out

There are few plans more deceptively complicated than organizing a night out with a big group of friends.

First comes the group chat. Someone throws out a few dates. Half the group responds. Someone else suggests a restaurant that has no reservations for six weeks. Eventually, against all odds, everybody agrees on a plan.

Recently, I got five friends together for dinner at La Pecora Bianca in the Theater District, followed by The Lost Boys on Broadway. It was exactly the kind of plan I love making: get a group around a table, eat a lot of pasta, and then walk over to a show.

For a group of six, though, even a relatively straightforward dinner can produce plenty of math. One person puts down a card, everyone figures out what they owe, and the Venmo requests start flying.

The Venmo Visa Credit Card has just launched, and while I’m not a cardholder yet, several of its rewards are built around exactly the kinds of expenses we already had planned for the night: dining, entertainment, and splitting expenses with friends.

    Dinner with the group

We started at La Pecora Bianca’s Theater District location on Broadway.

We did dinner family-style, starting with seasonal cocktails, including an autumn spritz that was an immediate favorite at the table. The appetizers were the real standouts, especially the aptly named Too Much Fried Mozzarella, essentially the world’s largest mozzarella stick, alongside cacio e pepe arancini and some of the best meatballs I’ve had in a long time. We rounded things out with truffle pizza and a few of La Pecora Bianca’s house-made pastas, and the attentive service made it an especially easy pre-Broadway stop. Our server even asked what time our show started so they could make sure we were out the door on time.

Dining is one of the Venmo Credit Card’s main reward categories. For a Venmo Credit Card cardholder, dining purchases earn 3% cash back.

If the cardholder then splits that eligible transaction with another Venmo user, and that friend pays them back in the Venmo app, the cardholder can earn an additional 1% cash-back bonus, for up to 4% cash back on the purchase. The split transaction must be completed within 30 days of the purchase.

Importantly, splitting the transaction isn’t required to earn the base 3% cash back. The extra 1% is an additional bonus for cardholders who use Venmo to settle up afterward.

That makes the feature pretty easy to picture in the context of a group dinner. It takes a spending category that many people already use and adds another potential reward opportunity when an eligible purchase is split through Venmo.

    From dinner to Broadway

After dinner, we headed over to the Longacre Theatre to see Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).

This meant that our evening also happened to move directly from one of the card’s bonus categories into another. Venmo Credit Card cardholders earn 3% cash back on entertainment purchases. And just like with dining, an eligible entertainment transaction that is split with another Venmo user and paid back through the Venmo app can earn an additional 1% cash-back bonus, for up to 4% cash back on the purchase.

So, for example, a cardholder who bought a group’s Broadway tickets and then used the split function to settle up with friends could potentially earn that additional bonus.

Since I don’t have it yet, I wasn’t using the Venmo Credit Card to pay for our night out. But having dinner and a Broadway show on the same itinerary made it easy to see how the two bonus categories could work in practice — and why I would benefit from adding the Venmo Credit Card to my wallet.

Only one person in our group had seen the cult-classic movie that The Lost Boys is based on, so most of us went in knowing very little. What we got was a surprisingly heartwarming story about family, belonging, and finding your people, wrapped in a production with some of the most impressive scenic design I’ve seen on Broadway, from a constantly transforming stage to actors literally flying through the air. Seeing that kind of talent and creativity happening live is one of the reasons I love Broadway so much, and it made for a pretty perfect night out with friends.

More ways to earn with Venmo

Of course, most regular days don’t involve dinner and Broadway.

The Venmo Credit Card also earns 3% cash back when a cardholder taps the Venmo button at checkout, pays a small business directly on Venmo, or pays for goods and services in the Venmo app.

Cardholders also earn 1% cash back on all other purchases, so the earning structure extends beyond dining, entertainment, and purchases made within Venmo. Cash back is deposited directly into the cardholder’s Venmo account, and there is no daily earning limit.

That last piece makes particular sense for a product connected to Venmo. Rather than earning cash back somewhere entirely separate, the rewards go into the same Venmo account a cardholder may already be using to pay friends, split expenses, and make purchases.

No annual fee and added security

The Venmo Credit Card has no annual fee,* which means there isn’t an annual cost that cardholders need to offset with the cash back they earn.

The card also includes $0 fraud liability for unauthorized purchases, 24/7 account monitoring, and secure virtual card numbers.

There is also no impact to an applicant’s credit score if an application is declined. An approved Venmo Credit Card application, however, will result in a hard credit inquiry, which may impact your credit bureau score.

Those aren’t necessarily the features that come to mind first when you think about a card earning cash back on dinner or Broadway tickets, but they’re useful parts of the overall package.

*New Accounts as of 1/1/26: Variable Purchase APR is 18.74%-30.74%. Variable Cash APR 30.74% and 5% Fee ($10 min). Min Interest Charge $2.

    Bottom line

More than anything, it made the Venmo Credit Card’s value pretty easy to understand. For someone who already uses Venmo regularly, wants a simple cash-back structure, or is often the person organizing group dinners, buying tickets, and sorting out shared expenses, the rewards can line up naturally with spending they’re already doing.

And if my friend group is any indication, there will always be another dinner reservation, another ticket to buy, and another group tab to settle.
