It has been a decade since United launched Polaris business class. The bright blue lie-flat seats were a big step forward for the airline, which, until then, had been fielding outdated side-by-side seats that were fast going the way of the dodo.

The rollout took around seven years, but eventually almost the entire United wide-body fleet received the Polaris treatment.

    ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY

But things change fast in the airline industry, and with airfares and competition on the rise, carriers have to improve their premium offerings apace. Hence, United unveiled an all-new version of Polaris, dubbed “Elevated,” in March 2026.

We’re in the midst of that rollout, but the new product represents a huge step forward for the airline, thanks to suite-style seats with closing doors, up-to-the-minute technology, and more upscale amenities and menus than before.

That said, unless you’re on a handful of routes from the airline’s hubs at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO), you’ll likely find the older Polaris seats on board (though, luckily, the “soft product” amenities are still the same).

How’s a flyer to parse all the information? Well, you’re in luck: This guide is meant to help you know exactly what to expect on your next United flight, including whether your aircraft will feature the latest seats.

We’ll also give you some tips on how to book United Polaris seats without burning through all your MileagePlus miles in one go.

    ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY

This is your classic “good news, bad news” situation.

The good news is that United’s fleet is among the most consistent in the world when it comes to the business-class seats and amenities on board. That’s because the airline completed the rollout of its first-generation Polaris business class on board almost its entire wide-body long-haul fleet in 2023.

There are two twists, though. In 2026, the airline announced plans for an updated version of Polaris, complete with fancy new suite-style seats that feature closing doors and first-row “Studio” suiteswith extra space and amenities. Travelers will find these aboard newly delivered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners at the moment; the airline has not announced any plans to retrofit its existing fleet.

On the flip side, United still flies a handful of Boeing 777-200s with its very old business class on certain domestic flights, including some to Hawaii. We’ll just briefly cover those, but focus on long-haul Polaris in our guide. That’s why we’re also skipping the 757-200 layout.

With that in mind, here’s a snapshot of which Polaris business class you’ll find aboard what aircraft.

United Polaris cabin layout and seat selection

Across most of the fleet, Polaris is in a 1-2-1 or 1-1-1 layout, with each passenger enjoying direct aisle access.

First-generation Polaris seats have a staggered configuration in which seats along the sides of the cabin are alternately closer to the window and the aisle. Meanwhile, those running along the middle are either closer together in a so-called “honeymoon” style or separated by their wider armrests.

    ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY

Although you should always double-check the seatmap for your flight, it’s typically true that A and L seats in odd-numbered rows are solo seats closer to the window, making them ideal for solo travelers seeking maximum privacy.

The D and F or G seats in odd-numbered rows tend to be the honeymoon-style seats that are better for couples or travel companions sitting together (don’t worry, they still have privacy dividers).

Although there are slight variations, the first-generation Polaris seats are around 20-21 inches wide and recline to lie-flat beds that measure 76-78 inches. Their entertainment screens are between 15.4 and 16 inches across diagonally.

New United Polaris Elevated cabin layout and seat selection

On the 787-9s with the new Polaris, there are actually two sections to the cabin with slightly different configurations. In the front section, the seats are in a classic reverse-herringbone layout, with the side seats angled toward the windows and those in the center angled toward one another.

In the back section, though, the center pods have their seatbacks closer together and their footrests angled toward the aisle, so those are probably better for couples.

The new Polaris Elevated seats are 21 inches wide and recline to 78-inch lie-flat beds. Aside from an updated, darker palette and materials that include textured seat shells, faux-marble finishes and caramel-toned woodgrain paneling, the main element that sets these seats apart from the older versions is a closing door, which provides an added level of privacy. Their entertainment screens are 19 inches across diagonally.

Also keep in mind that with the new Polaris Elevated cabins, the eight seats in rows 1 and 9 are Polaris “Studios,” which have more personal room, larger entertainment screens (27 inches) and more soft amenities.

Amenities in United Polaris business class

Aside from the “hard product,” or seats, United Polaris customers can expect similar “soft product” offerings, including:

    • Saks Fifth Avenue pillows and bedding
    • Brooks Brothers amenity kits
    • Perricone MD skincare products
    • Basic pajamas (upon request)
    • Meridian noise-canceling headphones
    • The ability to preorder meals

Those who book the Elevated Polaris “Studios” on the new Dreamliners also receive extra goodies like:

    • Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Champagne
    • Caviar amuse-bouche
    • Higher-quality pajamas with a hoodie
    • Special Perricone MD Plasma+ amenity kits

Routes with United Polaris business class

    ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY

United’s Polaris-equipped, wide-body jets operate long-haul international routes, including those to Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and South America from its various hubs, which include:

    • Denver International Airport (DEN)
    • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston
    • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
    • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
    • O’Hare International Airport (ORD) in Chicago
    • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
    • Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C.

As for those Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with the next-generation version of Polaris Elevated suite-style seats — of which the airline expects to have 30 in service by the end of 2027 — they are currently operating a limited number of routes from SFO to:

    • Heathrow Airport (LHR)
    • Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN)
    • Sydney Airport (SYD) (starting December 2026)

Starting in October 2026, though, the airline is also starting to fly them from IAH to:

    • Narita International Airport (NRT) in Tokyo, starting in January 2027
    • São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU)
    • SYD

The new suites will also appear on the airline’s Houston-London route in January 2027.

Just note that these routes are subject to change, so you should always double-check your specific flights.

How to check which Polaris seats your flight has?

The easiest way to see which type of Polaris seat your specific flight has is to check the seat map before booking. United makes it easier to do so on its search page when you are looking at flight options. Just because your flight is on one of the routes where the new 787-9s operate, don’t assume that your specific flight will have the new seats. After all, the airline might operate multiple daily frequencies, and the number of Elevated-equipped aircraft remains limited. Plus, there might be some equipment swaps.

    United Polaris Lounges

When it introduced its new Polaris concept a decade ago, United also revealed it would build a new family of premium lounges at its hub, just for Polaris customers and passengers in some partners’ premium cabins.

Currently, there are Polaris lounges in the following locations:

    • ORD
    • IAH
    • LAX
    • EWR
    • SFO
    • IAD

The lounges typically feature sophisticated living room-style areas, buffets and restaurant-style dining rooms serving destination-specific fare. There are also lively cocktail bars, quiet areas, rest areas and shower suites.

To access these lounges, you must be traveling on a Standard or Flexible United Polaris ticket (more on that below), in first class on Lufthansa, Swiss or ANA, or in business class on Air New Zealand, ANA or ITA. Passengers traveling on Basic or Flex business-class tickets with Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian or Brussels Airlines are also eligible.

There is also an arrivals lounge at Heathrow Airport exclusively for United Polaris passengers.

    United Polaris fare tiers

United now offers three types of Polaris business-class fares, each with a specific set of amenities and extras.

Fare type Seat selection Checked bags Club access Flight changes
    <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Base</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Paid</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>One free</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>United Club only</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>No</span>
    <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Standard</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Included</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Two free</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Polaris Lounge</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Yes</span>
    <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Flexible</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Included</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Two free</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Polaris Lounge</span> <span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Yes</span>

Base fares strip away the ability to change your flight, select a seat for free or visit a Polaris lounge, but you still get the same seats and onboard services as everyone else. That might be worth it for some travelers since we have found these fares to be several hundred dollars cheaper than Standard and Flexible fares. Just be sure your travel plans are set in stone before choosing this option.

For now, those special Studio seats aboard Dreamliners with the new Elevated cabins cost between $499 and $799 more in each direction, depending on the route.

How to book United Polaris business class with miles

United is part of the Star Alliance, so travelers have a few choices of frequent flyer programs when it comes to redeeming miles for Polaris. That said, award availability is much more widespread when booking through United’s own MileagePlus program. Here’s why.

    United MileagePlus

United MileagePlus is probably the best bet for most flyers who want to redeem miles for Polaris business class. The good news (for now) is that award itineraries are treated as Standard bucket tickets, so you can still enjoy lounge access and seat selection.

The program prices award tickets dynamically, meaning tickets that would cost more if paid for in cash also require more miles for awards. But if you are either a United MileagePlus elite or carry a United cobranded card, you might be eligible for lower redemption rates on award tickets booked through MileagePlus.

For instance, instead of redeeming 80,000 miles for this business-class ticket from Chicago to London, you would only be on the hook for 72,000 miles.

Or, even more dramatically, instead of a whopping 400,000 United MileagePlus miles, you’d need just 90,000 for a business-class ticket on either of these flights from Sydney, one of which features the new Elevated interiors. That’s a 77.5% discount.

If you don’t currently carry a United credit card, consider one of the following:

    • United℠ Explorer Card (see rates and fees)
    • United Quest℠ Card (see rates and fees)
    • United Club℠ Card (see rates and fees)
    • United℠ Business Card (see rates and fees)
    • United Gateway℠ Card (see rates and fees)

United is also a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards if you carry one of the following cards:

    • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees)
    • Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees)
    • Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ (see rates and fees)
    • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (see rates and fees)

    Air Canada Aeroplan

If you don’t have United miles or an easy way to earn them, you might want to consider Air Canada Aeroplan instead.

The program is a transfer partner of:

Aeroplan has a hybrid award chart based on both region and distance, so it can be a bit complicated. Expect to redeem 60,000-90,000 miles between the U.S. and Europe, or 85,000-115,000 miles between North America and Australia or eastern Asia.

Award availability is scant in most regions, but you can sometimes find decent tickets between the U.S. and Europe, like this one from Chicago to Amsterdam for 80,000 Aeroplan points and 79.70 Canadian dollars ($57).

    Bottom line

United Polaris business class is among the best premium products offered by U.S. airlines. Luckily for flyers, the seats are standardized across nearly the entire fleet, so you know what you’re getting when you book. Passengers on a handful of specific routes are in for a treat, though, as the airline continues to roll out its next-generation Polaris suites and special Studios.

Although it can be hard to find cost-effective award availability in Polaris, if you are a United elite or cobranded credit card holder, you might be in luck, thanks to preferential redemption rates.
